Haven’t you ever heard of “snapping turtles” … no no NO! they are NOT harmless! … they are predators. Larger varieties in the mid-atlantic USA can easily snap off a broom handle or larger piece of wood in their powerful jaws. They can grow to be larger than a trash can lid. Also most varieties of smapping turtle have necks long enough to reach around and remove your fingers if you are stupid enough to pick them up by the shell like they are a harmless “box turtle”

turtles are generally slow because they are cold blooded and need to conserve energy, and also because they are fairly well protected by their shells. That doesn’t mean they are always slow. They are mostly omnivorous, with a tendency toward carnivorous, and some like the notorious “snapping turtle” are strictly carnivorous. in nature, you eat what you can get. and sometimes you can get a pigeon. to someone who spent entire youth waist deep in mud and rivers chasing reptiles, this video is not very suprising. Yes, water turtles such as sliders, terrapins, painted turtles and snappers can be VERY fast when in their own element!

That was NOT a snapping turtle. ANY turtle will eat meat. Turtles are ominivors. They will eat plants or animal flesh. I believe that may be a box turtle or something along those lines. It was definitely not a snapper.

This turtle has nothing in common with them – flat, smooth shell, small head.

Any turtle will do this if it’s hungry or threatened, though. They’re not as big as a snapping turtle’s, but nearly all turtles have beaks and the ability to shoot their head out like this. Even the cute baby sliders you see at the pet store will take a finger off if you stick it in their face.
